A pop-up said my computer was infected. The "Microsoft agent" was the real threat.
A full-screen warning locked my browser with alarms and a number to call "Microsoft support." I called. The "technician" had me install software so he could fix it — which really gave him remote control of my computer. Then he asked me to buy gift cards to pay for the "repair." When he mentioned gift cards, I hung up. Real tech companies never cold-call you, never lock your screen with a phone number, and never ask for gift cards. I shut down, ran a real antivirus scan, changed my passwords from another device, and reported it. If a pop-up ever pressures you to call a number, it is a scam — just close the browser.
